Description and Purpose

Honeybees and flowering plants have been known to be in existence around the same time, someone hundred and fifty millions ago. The honeybee species Apis Mellifera or the socail bee has been domesticated for many centuries, and introduced throughout the world . Honey was considered to be an important food in ancient times. A jar of honey on the table was once considered a mark of great wealth.

Honey has been mentioned in the Quran and Bible as a preservative and curative medicine. In the Bible, The Israelites were promised a "land flowing with milk and honey". The ancient Egyptians are believed to have used honey in embalming. They kept a sealed jar of Honey among the foods put into the tomb for use in the "after life". Recent translations of Egyptians hieroglyphics indicate that physicians of 5000 years ago had recorded various medicinal treatments with Honey. The illustrious philosophers of ancient Greek & Roman history , such as Pythagoras, Democritus, Hippocrates, Aristophanes, Aristotle, Pliny the Elder , and the Claudius Galen , all recommended daily intake of honey to maintain health, and recognized its healing properties for a magnitude of ailments. Aristotle quote "Honey has special properties to enhance health and prolong life". Aristophanes said that honey could be taken as preservation from all diseases.

Flowers have special glands called 'nectaries' that
Produce nectar. Worker bees sip the nectar from the flowers from their long tongues , and carry it back to the hive. Each worker bee has a pouch in its body called a 'honey stomach' , where it stores the nectar.
In the pouch a process called 'Inversion' breaks the nectar into two simple sugars - fructose and glucose.
After bees deposit the nectar in the hive, they add certain enzymes to the nectar. As the water in the nectar evaporates, the nectar changes into Honey.

The primary constituents of the honey are the sugars - glucose, fructose, maltose, levulose
and sucrose. Humans assimilate theses sugars easier due to the bees adding enzymes and the predigestion of the nectar. Unlike refined sugar, honey is stored as carbohydrates and used as a fuel when required . the B-Complex vitamins, Vitamins C, K and H , Carotene, Folic acid and Pyridoxine are also found in honey in determiable amounts. The minerals are potassium , calcium, phosphorous, chlorine, sulphur, silica, iodine salts, manganese, chromium and copper. The enzymatic content of the honey
Is one of the highest food. Amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins, are vital for good health. The importance of protein in diet is necessary for the formation of new tissues, hormones and enzymes, and is constantly required by the body in the form of good nutrition. In the book 'Seven secrets of the Hive' by Charles H. Robson, it is stated " Honey is a superlative food for cells, tissues and organs
Of the body . As of the 1980's, over one hundred and eighty nutritional substances have been identified in the honey".

The book "Bee Pollen, Royal Jelly, Propolis and Honey" by Rita Elkins, M.A., states that honey has characteristics of being an antibiotic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, expectorant,
Anti-allergic, laxative, anti-anemic, and a tonic.
